I was a little worried that the french text might not come across right if people weren't thinking about the TARDIS's translation device, and the language that Van Gogh would have expected to see on it.

yeah, it actually took quite a while to do. mostly research. if you google, images "van gogh yellow house" you can see I really tried to faithfully reproduce his house. I also love the fact that the cafe imortalized in his "cafe terrace at night" is right around the corner from where my painting is set.
